An Inter School Hindustani Classical Vocal & Geet / Gazal Competition ‘SWAR UDGAM’ was organized in the school premises of Mount Carmel School in sector 47 of Chandigarh on Saturday. The Classical Vocal Competition was conducted for the students of classes VI to VIII and the Geet / Gazal Competition was conducted for the students of classes IX & X. Students from 20 Schools of the Tricity(Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali) and adjoining areas participated in this competition.
The programme started with a Welcome Speech by Juliana Marie Thomas, the Head Girl of the School. Moving forward, the students of the participating schools presented their items for the competition. Yaman, Shudh Sarang, Bhopali, Bhairav & Madhuvanti were some of the Ragas on which the participants sang. In the end the host School presented a song as a guest item. Mr. H. M. Singh, Mr. Vinod Pawar & Mr. Amit Gangani, renowned Music Directors, were the Judges for this Competition. Prizes to the winning Schools were given by Dr. Charles Samuel & Dr. Annie Charles Samuel, the Directors of the School. They congratulated the students for showing interest in Classical music and the Teachers for supporting them especially in this age when many youngsters feel that Classical music is boring. Mementos were presented to the Judges by Mrs. Iona Valerie Brendish, the Principal of the School.
The programme ended with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Jinsa Elizabeth George, a student of Class XI of the School, and then the National Anthem.
In Hindustani Classical Vocal, first prize was bagged by Baani of St. Joseph’s Sr. Sec. School, Sector 44, Chandigarh, whereas second prize was won by Divishi Jindal of Hallmark Public School, Sector 41, Chandigarh. The third prize was won by Shilpi Roy of Shishu Niketan School, Sector 43, Chandigarh and the consolation prize winner was Ashish Sahoo of Bhavan Vidhyala, Sector 27, Chandigarh.
In the GEET/GAZAL competition, Alisha Deen of Sacred Heart Sr. Sec. School, Sector 26, Chandigarh won first prize whereas Jaskaran Singh of Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, Chandigarh won second and Dushyant Joshi of Saffron City School, Fatehgarh Sahab, Punjab won third prize. Consolation prize was grabbed by Harnoor Singh of Saupin’s School, Sector 32, Chandigarh.
