Panjab University to organize 9th Rose Festival on 9th, 10th and 11thFebruary

The Horticulture Division of Panjab University is going to organise 9th Rose Festival at Panjab University. The 3 days event will witness various competitions such as Flower and photography competition, band competition by various schools, fashion competition, singing, Rangoli, Collage making, Slogan writing, Face painting. The main attraction of the event would be a fashion show by Special Children which will be held on 10th of Jaunary. Other would include Rose Prince and Princess Competition, Poetic recitation, Dancing competition, Creative Mehandi, Painting and Fancy dress competition.

"Newscapes-5" - An exhibition of Photo-Journalists inaugurated by UT Administrator

As every photograph speaks itself and sometimes words are not enough to define it, same way the work displayed by 55 Tri-City photojournalists speaks thousand words who participated in “Newscapes -5”, an exhibition in the memory of eminent Photojournalist Shri Yog Joy which was organised by Chandigarh Press Club. The show was inaugurated by UT Administrator and Governor of Punjab VP Singh Badnore at Punjab Kala Bhawan in sector 16 of Chandigarh on Saturday. Special galleries were set up where the photography of Late Shri Yog Joy and UT Administrator was displayed. Not only this, the Guest’s gallery had work of Eminent Photo-Journalists Swadesh Talwar, RP Sharma, Anil Puri and Rajnish Katyal.


The work of participants expressed their vision in which numerous photography angles, the timings of capture, moods can be seen. The work on either side highlights celebrations, happiness and devotion but on the other side it also shows issues like mob attacking people, combat, damages by fire, begging and animal rescue.

Addresses the gathering, UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore appreciated the hard work of photo-journalists. He said that the life of photo-journalists revolves around camera and they have spent all their life in capturing best photographs. He further handed over prizes to the student participants who won various positions in the photography competition which was part of the show. The exhibition in on display till 29th of January 2018.

Honk Free awareness drive organised by Mount Carmel School

Mount Carmel School, Sector 47-B, Chandigarh, in association with Chandigarh Traffic Police conducted a Honk Free Awareness Programme at  3 BRD Air Force Light Point, near Kalibari temple, Chandigarh.  The awareness campaign was a part of the initiative of Chandigarh Traffic Police to make our city Honk Free. The students stood at the Light Point holding posters and requested the people in the vehicles not to honk unnecessarily on the roads.

They were told that horn in the vehicle is to be used only for emergencies and not for getting the traffic in front of them to move faster. The motorists were also told about the negative effects of noise pollution as a result of using the horn unnecessarily. The students also requested them to paste ‘No Honking Stickers’ on their vehicles, which were made available by the Chandigarh traffic Police.

Saupin’s 32 school Chandigarh has once again achieved the distinction for the second consecutive year by representing our country at the International level. The students Kannan Nigam, Parin Choudhary, Gurnoor Sohal and Khushi Dangi of Class 6 declared the winners in the Jet Toy AWIM 10th National Olympics organised by SAE International and SAEINDIA Foundation Pune. They will now represent India at the International meet to be held in Detroit USA.

Smiling Kiddies learn the importance of White Colour

As white colour is associated with light, goodness, innocence and purity, ‘White Colour Day’ was celebrated at Smiling Kiddies Playway School in Zirakpur. The day was great fun for all the kiddies as they participated with great enthusiasm. The stage was decorated with white colour objects and all dressed up in white colour dresses. Some kids of playgroup made a Sheep in a group cotton pasting activity. Some of them pasted stars with moon. The kiddies of Nursery and KG classes made puppets with white socks. Kiddies also enjoyed white colour dishes in their Tiffin’s.

Saunpin’s Students excel in Science Exhibition

Jaskirat Kaur Sethi and Akanksha Gupta, students of Class 10 of Saupin's School sector 32 Chandigarh stood first in the theme “Waste Management” and “Water Body Conservation” in the CBSE Regional level Science Exhibition 2017-2018 held at Hansraj Public School in Sector 6 of Panchkula. They have also qualified for the Nationals to be held at Delhi. There were total of 143 exhibits under 7 sub themes and 35 exhibits under Waste management and Water Body Conservation.

Students brought Laurels to Saupin's 32 School

Saupin’s 32 participated in an Inter School Computer Carnival organised by Koshish Educator forum in which 18 schools from the city took part. Aarush Singhal of Class IV stood first in the MS Paint Competition on the theme-“My Favourite Sport”. Parul Bhalla and Shrishti Chuhan of Class VIII bagged the second prize in the Power Point presentation, the topic for which was “Why Sports?”

St Xavier's High School Panchkula organised Walkathon

With the growing road rage and road accidents, St. Xavier's High School, Panchkula organised an Inter-house run for a cause "Walk-a-thon" on January 17, 2018. A "Walk-a-thon" is a new initiative which has the objective to create awareness. Road rage is a major problem on roads everyday causing anger, stress, anxiety and accidents. Six students from each house participated for this noble cause. Sixteen students were in the cheering squad to cheer the students of all four houses - Indian House, Arctic House, Atlantic House and Pacific House. Students were holding banners which had important captions such as "Speed thrills but kills", "You drink, you drive, you might not survive", "Love safety Marry rules, Divorce speed" & "Alert today Alive tomorrow". The main aim of this Walk-a-thon was as road users we all need to learn to deal with these problems and prevent unnecessary violence towards others on the road and even those walking on the pavement. Principal George S. Shear interacted with the students and encouraged them to come forward for such events. S. Duggal, the Vice Principal reminded the students that accidents bring tears, safety brings cheer. Sabina Banerjee, Vice Principal activities said that speed thrills but leads to hospital bills. They applauded and appreciated the students.

Saupin’s 32 School Won Molly Carver Memorial Cricket Tournament

The Saupin’s 32 U-17 Cricket boys team did the school proud by winning the Molly Carver Memorial Cricket tournament. They defeated St Joseph’s School, Vivek High Mohali, St Annes School and finally the host school St Stephen’s. In the 20 over match Saupin’s took a 6 run lead in the super over. Sachit Sharma was declared the Man of the Match, Best Batsman and Player of the Tournament.

Lohri was celebrated at St. Xavier`s Senior Secondary School in sector 45 of Chandigarh with a great zeal. Students and teachers were fully absorbed in the festive spirit of Lohri. A special assembly was conducted where in students from junior and senior wing participated. Through a brief speech students were told old about the significance of lohri. The students stole the show by singing the lohri song ‘Sunder Munderiye’.

The Holy Wonder Smart School celebrates Lohri

The students and staff members of The Holy Wonder Smart School congregated to celebrate Lohri at the school campus where a huge bonfire was lit. A colorful function was organized on Friday to celebrate the festival.
Ashwin Arora, Director of School lighted the bonfire. Students and staff encircled around the bonfire. Groundnuts and ‘Reweri’ were distributed to everyone present there to enjoy the celebrations.
Speaking on the occasion, Director Ashwin Arora highlighted the importance of festival. She told that it was an auspicious day, which marked the culmination of winter and was a symbol of fertility. She said that Lohri is a grand event of social and cultural integration, bringing about unity, amity, harmony among all castes and community. It is a time when people from all castes and social strata come together forgetting all differences and grievances.

The Students presented cultural items on this occasion and present folk and traditional dances. Apart from singing folk songs, students danced to the tunes of dhol. Poems and songs were recited in praise of one of the hero of Punjab, “Dulha Bhatti” who used to help the poor and fought for their rights. The staff and the students enjoyed basking in the sun and eating goodies.

HIV/AIDS awareness to mark NATIONAL YOUTH DAY

National Youth Day is celebrated in India on 12th of January on the birthday of Swami Vivekananda. Since 1985 the event is celebrated in India every year. This day is an opportunity when youth can be sanitized on various important issues like HIV/AIDS. Dr Vanita Gupta, Project Director, Chandigarh State AIDS Control Society said that young people are often the World’s strongest advocates. Researchers have shown that young people are more vulnerable to HIV/AIDS. Young People between the ages of 15-24 are the group most affected by HIV/AIDS and account for 40% of all Adult HIV infections. To address the issue of HIV/AIDS Chandigarh State AIDS Control Society had organized an HIV/AIDS awareness event to mark “National Youth Day”.

The awareness event was organized in the premises of Dev Samaj College for Women, Sector - 45, Chandigarh where students participated in various competitions like Rangoli making, poster making, face painting, essay writing and slogan writing competitions on the theme of HIV/AIDS and Voluntary Blood donation. The objective of the event was to sensitize the youth on HIV/AIDS and to motivate them to come forward and take the correct information on HIV modes of transmission and prevention. To make out of school youth aware about HIV/AIDS, an awareness rally was flagged off by Bikram Singh Rana, State Liaison Officer, NSS Chandigarh. The rally went around the area of Burail creating awareness about HIV/AIDS and promoting Voluntary Blood Donation. Dr Agnese Dhillon, Secreratry, Dev Samaj College was also present during the event.

Municipal Corporation Chandigarh celebrates Lohri

The Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has organized ‘Lohri’ at MC office compound in sector 17 of Chandigarh on Friday. Member of Parliament, UT Kirron Kher was the chief guest during the function. Others including Satya Pal Jain, Additional Solicitor General of India, UT Mayor Davesh Moudgil, Saurabh Mishra, IAS Additional Commissioner, Gurpreet Singh Dhillon, Senior Deputy Mayor, Vinod Kumar Aggarwal, Deputy Mayor, Anil Garg, Additional Commissioner, Tejdeep Singh Saini, Joint Commissioner, Manoj Bansal, Chief Engineer, Sanjay Arora, S.E. (PH), other councillors, senior officers and all employees of MC were present during the occasion.

Mrs. Angela Owen, Chairperson of Brisbane city council, Australia and Ms. Gurpreet Pinky Singh, president, Punjabi Welfare Australia & Chairperson area libral national party and multicultural chief of Queensland state were special guests during the function. The event started with lighting of the “Lohri bonfire” followed by a cultural programme by women staffers of Municipal Corporation of traditional Punjabi touch. Gidha and Bhangra were also performed by the employees of MC. The theme of the Lohri celebration was “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao”.

Davesh Moudgil, Mayor of Chandigarh extended his greetings to the employees of MC and people of Chandigarh on the occasion of Lohri and Makar Sankranti. He described these festivals as harbingers of peace, progress and prosperity. He said that the festival as a part of composite cultural heritage which strengthens the communal harmony and cultural fabric of the country. Such festivals should be celebrated with zeal and traditional fervour, he added.

NIIFT Mohali celebrates Lohri

NIIFT, preserving the tradition once again welcomed the first festival of the year, Lohri in its true essence at its Campus on Friday. DPS Kharbanda, IAS,Director General NIIFT along with K S Brar, Director NIIFT and Inderjit Singh, Registrar NIIFT lit the auspicious bonfire to mark the occasion.

“The festival of Lohri brings happiness for every class and age group in North India. As we have students from varied cultural background it becomes utmost important to keep them connected to our Punjabi Virsa.” as told by DPS Kharbanda. K S Brar wished that the warmth of bonfire, sweetness of ‘Gur’ and ‘Rewri’ at Lohri remain with the students forever. He further added that prospectus for admissions 2018 at NIIFT, MOHALI will be made available from the month of February and that entrance examination will be held in the month of June 2018.



Lohri is considered as a festival of farmers. Farmers dedicate their crop to God in the form of bonfire and wish for their health, wealth and prosperity. The same environment was palpable at NIIFT. Students tapped their toes on filmy songs like “… Lo Aagai Lohri Ve… Punjabi boliyaan meant for Lohri like “Sunder Mundariye.” and many others. Faculty members also enjoyed and participated with full zeal. Everyone enjoyed the traditional dhol beats and danced on the Punjabi music.


The event ended on a very happy note with NIIFT embarking a great new start of the Hindu New Year.
