Animal Law training programme concluded at Panjab University

A two days workshop on LAWS related to Animal Protection and Welfare concluded at Panjab University Chandigarh which was organized by NSS, Panjab University in collaboration with Humane Society International/India and NALSAR Hyderabad. More than 110 participants from Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, were made aware about the existing laws related to protection and welfare of the animals in India.
“I attended a lot of trainings related to human welfare. Women empowerment, children issues but this is the first kind of training, I had ever attended which is about animal welfare and it made me realize that they are equally important as human beings ” said Jagmandeep Singh from Ropar, Punjab. Another participant Birbal Singh from Sangrur said such trainings should happen in our Malwa region also, so that more and more youngsters can be imparted with correct an updated knowledge.
“Before this, I was not aware about the various sections of the Indian Penal code, which can be used to put the culprit of animal cruelty behind the bars” said Vaibhav Gupta from Chandigarh. An animal activist Meenakshi Mahapatra from Panchkula also shared her plans of making the tri-city a safe place for animals. In this programme the participants were trained on how to write a Complaint application to the Police against the person who has done animal cruelty. They were also told about the usage of technological advancements meant for the protection of animals. Tarun Sharma, Abhilasha Nadda, Manpreet Singh Mavi and Hannu Gandhi, from Centre for Social Work, Panjab University also shared their work undertaken by them for the sterilization of animals especially dogs. The trainers shared the most important provisions under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, The Transport of Animals Rules, Panjab University Chandigarh 1978, The Animal Birth Control (Dogs) Rules, 2001 etc.
Concluding the event, Gaurav Gaur, Assistant Professor and NSS Programme officer thanked the trainers and the agencies involved in this training programme and also Panjab University authorities for conducting such programme. Dr Navdeep Sharma, Programme Co-ordinator also motivated the participants and honoured the trainers and felicitated the participants with certificates.
