Sector 17 Plaza looked different and colourful, with hundreds of young students inspired by Swedish teen Climate Change activist Greta Thunberg joined hands to take lead and inspire CHANGE. ‘Climategiri’ as they call it saw active and vibrant participation of over 5000 School students, teachers, NGO activists and other people with Governor, Punjab & Administrator, UT, Chandigarh V.P. Singh Badnore also blessed the occasion with his presence and guidance to young people to ‘Be the Change’.
“To imbibe and inculcate environmental concerns among young minds, ‘Climategiri’ was organized jointly by Eco Club of St. Stephen’s School, Yuvsatta-an NGO, Department of Environment, Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee, Municipal Corporation, Earth Day Network India, Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Pratyak-a Delhi based child rights group and Independent Schools Association-ISA"-said Harjinder Kaur, Chairperson, CCPCR.
Louis Lopez, Principal of the St. Stephen’s School added that “young people around the world have been walking out of school and work to join the latest protests against the climate crisis. So we thought why not we facilitate such an initiative at Chandigarh and we feel fortunate to get so much support from one and all”.
RD Singh, Secretary of Independent Schools Association said that students and teachers from over 140+ tricity Schools participated and showcased the major environmental challenges’ by way of green-circus, fashion show on theme of green living, slogan writing, poster and collage making, models on climate change, graffiti on urgent climate action, solo and group songs, street plays etc.
Steve Dom Rocha, Secretary of PRATYeK, a Delhi based Child Rights group, whose group of 50 young change makers from marginalized communities especially came to participate at Climategiri bringing their group of green-circus and child rights activists, shared that realizing rights for all and ensuring all opportunities to every child and every member of the earth community in India if not the world is their main objective. And he thanked CCPCR-Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights for supporting their travel and stay for this event.
Besides the Governor, prominent amongst those who graced the occasion included Rajbala Malok, Mayor, Manoj Kumar Parida, Advisor, Arun Kumar Gupta, Home Secretary, Kamal Kishor Yadav, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Bibi Harjinder Kaur, Chairperson, CCPCR-Chandigarh Commissioner for Protection of Child Rights, TC Nautiyal, Member Secretary, CPCC-Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee, S. RS Brar, Director, School Education, Chandigarh Administration, Dr. Abdul Qayum, DCF, Deptt, of Forests & Pramod Sharma, Coordinator, Yuvsatta.
